MINISTRY IN MOREE

In March 1962 the Community of the Daughters of Charity promised the then Bishop of Armidale, Bishop Doody, in whose Diocese Moree is situated, that they would be prepared to undertake the work of St Pius X Mission to Aboriginal people.

After three years of planning three Sisters set out from Sydney on 22 March 1965 and took up residence with the Sisters of Mercy until their own house was completed on 2 August 1965.

The works undertaken at the time included:

  • a preschool for Aboriginal children aged from three to five years
  • a medical clinic for general health and hygiene for Aboriginal women and children
  • home visitation
  • teenage youth club for boys and girls aged thirteen years and over
  • an adult sewing class
  • an adult Religious Instruction class

Over the next ten years tremendous improvements took place in the services offered to the people of Moree. The aim was always to help the Aboriginal people to become a self-reliant community and for the Sisters to hand over to Aboriginal Management the Pius X Mission Centre.

This eventually took place on 1 July 1987 when the Sisters moved to 23 Dover Street and became involved in parish pastoral work while continuing to be in a supportive role to the new management at the Centre. A new era had commenced as the people began to determine their own future.

The mission of the Daughters of Charity in Moree still continues to this present time from their Dover Street home. The Sisters are engaged in:

  • Visiting people in their homes and in hospital
  • Volunteering at Aged Care facilities
  • Providing transport for ministry, meetings, Sacramental and Lenten programmes
  • Participating in a wide variety of family group activities
  • Teaching catechetics in the State School
